I love my melanin. It is vibrant. It is bold. It is radiant. It glows under the sunlight and under the moonlight, it glistens. I am a melanin goddess and wouldn’t trade my skin tone for anything in the world.
My skin texture on the other hand can be somewhat problematic due to its extreme dryness and hyperpigmentation in some areas of my body, but I love taking care of it either way. It is an integral part of my self-care routine I absolutely love to indulge in. And top of my list of skincare practices is exfoliation or body scrub.
Scrubs are perfect for sloughing dead skin off of your body. I love exfoliating my skin. It is something I do every week or twice sometimes, and I never tire of how the whole experience makes me feel. Not only does it relax me mentally, but also, after a good body scrub my skin feels soooo smooth and soooo silky, and I feel amazing!
Though our beauty supply stores are packed with all sorts of body scrubs of all price ranges and for all skin types, I really prefer to make mine. For the past couple of years, I’ve made the conscious decision to use more natural products for my skin (and home) care, and making my own body scrub falls within that realm.
Most companies, even companies who claim that their products are natural, clean, or organic, often don’t fully disclose everything in their products. And given that the skin is the largest organ of your body, it is important not only that you take good care of it, but also that know what you are putting in and on your body. The wonderful thing about homemade scrubs is that not only are they infinitely cheaper than store-bought ones, but also, you have the ability to control your own ingredients; qualitatively and quantitatively.
A DIY Body Scrub is the perfect thing to keep next to your bathroom sink to scrub your hands and keep them nice and soft. Or bring it in the shower with you for the full-body scrub experience! I also love giving sugar scrubs away as gifts! These make the perfect teacher gifts, baby shower gifts, Mother’s Day gifts, or birthday gifts! Put it in a pretty jar with a cute ribbon and voila; you have a cute gift that your friend or loved one will love.
The basic ingredient of a DIY scrub is the main exfoliator — either sea salt or cane sugar. Sea salt gives you a more vigorous exfoliation due to the size of its crystals, while cane sugar’s fine crystals give a softer scrub. Personally, I am a little addicted to body scrubs and use a good number of them with a variety of ingredients. I will be sharing some of my favourite homemade scrubs in subsequent posts and tell you how and why I use them. But today I will love to start with my go-to scrub, which is the lemon sugar and honey scrub.
Sugar, Honey, Lemon are the key ingredients in this scrub. These are all items you can easily find in your kitchen and it takes just a couple of minutes to whip them all together for a fabulous all-natural homemade scrub.
The main benefits of this scrub lie in its ingredients:
Sugar: A natural exfoliator; a natural source of glycolic acid which evens out skin tone, cleans pores, and improves overall skin texture by removing dead, dull skin cells. Any sugar works just fine, but if you can lay your hands on raw sugar, you’ve got a winner on your hands.
Honey: A natural source of anti-oxidants, it is the perfect ingredient for age prevention. Also, as a natural humectant honey locks water into the skin and keeps the complexion looking luxurious. Its antibacterial properties benefit acne-prone skin by reducing breakouts.
Lemon: A natural source of vitamin C which is an ingredient commonly used to lighten sun and age spots and even out skin tone. Not only does lemon give a wonderfully clean scent to your homemade scrub, but it is also a natural astringent that tightens pores and brightens the complexion.
Carrier Oil: A natural oil of your choice which will serve as a natural moisturizing ingredient. I love to use Olive or Sweet almond oil but you are free to use any natural carrier oil that works for your skin.
This DIY lemon and sugar scrub is so scrumptious and a beauty obsession of mine which I use on my face and body all year round for clear skin. It is ideal for rough spots like feet, knees, elbows, and hands, but works equally well for delicate areas like your face and lips.
To use, apply a little amount on a clean damp face or desired parts of the body and rub in gentle circular motions for 3 to 5 minutes. Be cautious of using it on open wounds, as lemon has a tendency to sting. Leave on for 2-3 minutes and rinse with cool or lukewarm water. Your whole mood and skin will immediately feel uplifting and luxurious. Follow up with your favourite moisturizer.
♦ In a bowl add in 2½ cups of granulated sugar, juice of half a lemon, 2 tablespoons of pure honey, and a tablespoon of the carrier oil of your choice.
♦ Mix everything and add in more of any of the ingredients until you get the quantity and consistency you desire.
♦ Transfer into an airtight container of your choice and tie a lovely ribbon or twine if you want to offer this scrub as a gift. It is best to store this in a cool dry place that is not in direct sunlight. Super simple right?!
N.B: Avoid making too much of this scrub at one time because the ingredients are all-natural and can go bad. So better to make it in small batches and store in the fridge whenever you do, to be used as soon as possible.
This sugar scrub recipe is crazy simple to make and the perfect way to keep my skin nice and smooth all year long. It only takes about 5 minutes to make and you can keep this for yourself or give it away as gifts to your friends and family. Women in my circle know this of me; I never tire of gifting them my homemade sugar scrubs and the feedback is always excellent.
